Sooner Sweep: Key Moments and Top Performances from Oklahoma’s Historic Series Win Over Texas

In one of the most thrilling and significant series of Oklahoma’s season, the No. 4/3 Sooners delivered a three-game sweep over archrival and second-ranked Texas, asserting their championship mettle and igniting Love’s Field with an unforgettable weekend of clutch hits, historic performances, and record-breaking crowds.

Oklahoma (42-5, 16-5 SEC) secured the sweep with a pair of tight one-run victories in the bookend games and a decisive win in Saturday’s middle contest. The Sooners’ sweep marked the program’s first-ever three-game sweep over a top-five opponent, and they did it with power, poise, and plenty of star power in front of an all-time series attendance record of 13,734 fans.

Here’s a breakdown of the key moments and standout performances that defined the Sooners’ dominant weekend.

Game One: Agbayani’s Grand Slam Ignites Series-Opening Victory (OU 7, Texas 6)

Friday night’s opener set the tone for the series as Ailana Agbayani delivered one of the finest games of her career. The junior utility star broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third with a no-doubt grand slam to left field, sparking a five-run inning that gave Oklahoma a commanding 6-1 lead. It was her first home run since February and tied her career high with five RBIs.

Texas clawed back with five runs of their own across the fourth and fifth innings, trimming the deficit to one, but Agbayani wasn’t done. With the Sooners needing a response, she roped a fifth-inning RBI double that ultimately proved to be the game-winner.

In the circle, Sam Landry held firm in a tense seventh inning. With the tying run on base and the dangerous Joley Mitchell at the plate, Landry induced a flyout to end the game, sealing her 16th win of the season in her 13th complete game effort.

Nelly McEnroe-Marinas quietly put together a perfect 3-for-3 night with two doubles and three runs scored, while Gabbie Garcia added her 13th home run of the season to kickstart the third-inning surge.

The game also shattered the Love’s Field single-game attendance record with 4,587 fans in attendance—until that record was broken again two days later.

Game Two: Dayton Delivers, Deal Dominates in Saturday Showcase (OU 7, Texas 2)

Saturday’s game belonged to Kierston Deal and Abigale Dayton.

Deal was masterful from start to finish, scattering four hits across seven innings for her second complete game against a top-10 team this season. She kept Texas off balance with sharp movement and timely ground balls, allowing the Sooners to slowly build a lead they would never relinquish.

Ella Parker got things rolling offensively with a towering solo home run in the third inning, and the Sooners added two more in the fourth behind a clutch Dayton RBI double and a Kasidi Pickering sacrifice fly.

The fifth inning saw Oklahoma fully break through. After loading the bases, Dayton laced a two-run single up the middle to cap a season-best three-RBI night. McEnroe-Marinas also added a solo homer to round out the scoring.

On a night when the Sooners celebrated Sam Landry’s selection into the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, her teammates gave her a fitting tribute on the field with a commanding team performance.

Game Three: Sooners Survive Slugfest for Senior Day Sweep (OU 9, Texas 8)

In the most dramatic contest of the weekend, Oklahoma overcame a furious Texas rally to win a Sunday slugfest and secure the sweep.

The Sooners erupted early with an offensive blitz. Parker opened the scoring with a 10-pitch at-bat that ended in a 251-foot bomb to right field. Two batters later, Garcia launched a towering three-run shot on the 12th pitch of her at-bat, giving OU a 5-0 lead. They extended that to 8-0 in the third inning, with Agbayani and Sanders again in the middle of the action.

But Texas wasn’t going down without a fight. The Longhorns plated six in the fourth inning on a flurry of singles and tied the game at 8-8 with a Katie Stewart two-run homer in the fifth.

That’s when Landry entered once again—and slammed the door shut.

Pitching the final 3.2 innings, Landry struck out five and allowed just one baserunner over the final two frames. Her calm presence allowed OU to reclaim the lead in the sixth when Isabela Emerling delivered a sacrifice fly to score McEnroe-Marinas with the eventual winning run.

Garcia, whose hot bat produced four RBIs on the day, also made the defensive play of the afternoon, ranging deep into the hole to secure the game’s final out.

Sunday’s finale saw another new Love’s Field attendance record set with 4,609 fans, cementing a three-day celebration of elite softball.

Series Highlights and Historical Notes

  • Ailana Agbayani was sensational all weekend, collecting six hits, driving in six runs, and producing two of the series’ most critical hits—Friday’s grand slam and Sunday’s game-winning run.
  • Sam Landry was a steadying force in the circle, picking up two wins and throwing 10.2 innings of high-leverage softball, allowing just two earned runs in relief on Sunday.
  • Gabbie Garcia homered in back-to-back games and tied a season high with four RBIs in Sunday’s finale, bringing her season total to 14 home runs—tied for the team lead.
  • Ella Parker also homered in back-to-back games and passed the 100 career starts and 100 career runs marks during the weekend.
  • The Sooners remain unbeaten (35-0) when scoring at least six runs and improved to 5-1 in one-run games on the season.
  • The sweep marked Oklahoma’s fourth sweep of a ranked SEC opponent this season and solidified their place in the thick of the SEC title race.

Looking Ahead

With momentum on their side and an increasingly balanced offense, the Sooners will head to Gainesville for their regular-season finale against Florida starting Thursday, May 1. If their sweep of Texas is any indication, Patty Gasso’s club is peaking at the right time—and ready for a postseason run.

From walk-offs to blowouts, grand slams to gut checks, this past weekend at Love’s Field wasn’t just a sweep. It was a statement.
