Redshirt junior defensive back Will Johnson (jersey #12) pretty much came out of nowhere to be a contributor for Oklahoma’s defense in 2015. After making his debut against Tennessee, he recorded the first tackle and pass breakup of his Oklahoma career against Kansas State a month later. The next week Johnson drew his first start as a Sooner against Texas Tech on October 24th and recorded a career-high six tackles in Oklahoma’s 63-27 win.
Will Johnson went on to make eleven game appearances in 2015, only missing the season opener against Akron and the Texas game. Now the 6-0/192 nickelback looks to be a full-time starter in 2016 and a key figure in what looks to be one of the best secondaries in the Big 12.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland and product of Monroe Community College (Rochester, NY), Johnson signed as a member of Oklahoma’s 2015 class. He was rated as a 3-star JUCO prospect by 247Sports but not really expected to be an immediate player. Now he’ll enter the 2016 season with a load of expectations weighing over him.
