Jake Irvin struck out seven batters and Steele Walker drove in four RBI as the Oklahoma Sooners won their fourth consecutive baseball game on Saturday afternoon.
Playing in the opener of the 19 Ways Invitational, the Sooners leaned on the reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week to tame the Villanova Wildcats. Irvin allowed just one run, off four hits, while striking out seven Wildcat batters over seven innings of work to improve his season record to 2-0. Irvin gave way to Braidyn Fink in the eighth but only lasted a third of an inning before Connor Berry came in to close out the game.
Oklahoma posted a run in the second, third, and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats pushed their first run across in the top of the sixth. The Sooners responded by producing a four-run bottom half of the inning.
Brandon Zaragoza drew a bases-loaded walk for OU’s first run of the sixth and then a single through the left side by Kyler Murray scored Renae Martinez. Another single, this time by Kyle Mendenhall, scored Quin Walbergh before Steele Walker’s fielder’s choice ended the scoring in the sixth by bring Zaragoza home.
Walker delivered a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give him a total of four runs batted in off a 2-for-5 hit performance from the plate.
The Sooners are back in action against Northern Illinois at Noon on Saturday and then will face Villanova again Saturday evening.
