On Sunday, the Oklahoma Sooners outscored the Kennesaw State Owls 14-4 to complete a weekend sweep. Playing on the road in Georgia, Pete Hughes and a group of youngsters secured a four game win streak. Returning after a 4-1 run in the Peach State, OU stands 21-3 on the year.
In the second inning, Domenic DeRenzo stepped up to the plate as the designated hitter. With one swing of the bat, the sophomore drove the ball over the fence marking the first home run of the year for DeRenzo. Already seeing one runner on, the two run shot pushed Oklahoma into the lead. In the fourth inning, Steele Walker reached base on a single. Advancing on a sacrifice, the outfield stole third later to put pressure on the defense. Finally coming home on an RBI single from Renae Martinez, the Sooners added a bit of a safety net but the Owls refused to go down without a fight.
Facing Devon Perez, the Owls cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame. A home run from two batters very well could have rattled Perez. But, the right-handed pitcher continued with the game plan. Tossing 6.1 innings, the junior surrendered only one additional run following the back-to-back blasts.
Answering the challenge, Brandon Zaragoza knocked a one out single to get the ball rolling in the fifth. Loading the bases thanks to two consecutive walks, another single pushed one runner across the plate bringing the lead to 4-2. However, a dropped fly ball allowed the remaining two baserunners to reach home safely extending the advantage even further.
Trading runs in the sixth, Oklahoma put things out of a reach with a seven-run ninth inning. OU returns to play the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday in a non-conference bout.
