Oklahoma Sooners Cruise To 59-31 Victory Over West Virginia

The Oklahoma Sooners started Kyler Murray on Saturday evening against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The dual-sport athlete led the team down the field for the first score of the outing before Baker Mayfield took over. Cursing to victory, Oklahoma posted a 59-31 win over WVU in front of a home crowd. Claiming an eleventh win on the year, Lincoln Riley and the Sooners must now begin preparations for the Big 12 Championship Game.

Striking quickly and often, OU possessed the ball for a mere 24:48 throughout the duration of the contest. In a chippy game, the program displayed a variety of weapons from various positions. Throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns, Mayfield ingnited the team as well as the crowd on Senior Day. Reaching 646 total yards and 59 points, the effort marks the most points scored by OU against the Mountaineers in program history.  However, the most impressive feature of the day may have been Mayfield’s 20 yards per play average. These number push the senior quarterback one step closer to claiming the Heisman Trophy later this year.

Despite the prolific numbers on the year, it has not been Mayfield starring recently. Rather it has been a local product and running back, Rodney Anderson. Behind grit and determination, Anderson has become a completely different back over the course of five games. Rushing for 118 yards, the RS sophomore crossed the goal line four times.

But, fans cannot sleep on the defense. Recovering 2-of-3 fumbles on the day, the Oklahoma defense produced a third consecutive solid outing. For those on the committee looking for a complete team, it appears as though the Sooners are peaking at the right time.

WVU’s Chris Chugunov stepped in for the injured Will Grier for the first time as a starter. Showing some promise, the quarterback threw for 137 yards against a young secondary. More impressively, the Mountaineers found a running back capable of big yardage. Kennedy McCoy was clearly the focus of the offensive scheme. Rushing time and time again, the back collected 138 yards on the ground to go alongside three scores.

The Big 12 Championship will be held next Saturday in Arlington, Texas. Let us know if you’ll be there!
