The Oklahoma Sooners find themselves in a unique situation due to attrition within the basketball program. Looking to replace A large portion of the production, some think Lon Kruger’s squad can remain competitive in the Big 12 Conference with a few graduate transfers sitting on the roster. Regardless of the personnel sitiuation, this team will face a few early tests.
One of those tests pits the Sooners against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on December 4th in New York City. Set to take place in the historic Madison Square Garden, the two collide in game one of the Jimmy V Classic. Following suit, West Virginia and Florida take the floor immediately after in the one-day doubleheader event.
Although Oklahoma and the Fighting Irish have never met on the hardwood, ND Head Coach Mike Brey said, “We are honored to be a part of this year’s Jimmy V Classic and help support the V Foundation. It is one of the signature events of the college basketball season and to get back to The Garden and face a Power Five opponent on national television will be a great opportunity for our group.”
Neither program can claim a spot in the early preseason top twenty-five. Yet it does not distract from the importance of the match up. Being presented with a non-conference barometer can set the tone for the conference slate and Kruger clearly knows that. “Mike Brey has done a phenomenal job with the Notre Dame program,” said Coach Kruger, “and we look forward to facing them in the heart of our non-conference schedule.”
It’s the first known test of the non-conference schedule as Oklahoma won’t face USC until December 15th. So, get your popcorn and take a seat on December 4th as the game tips off at 6 PM CT.
