The Oklahoma Sooners may be losing a plethora of talent from the offensive side of the ball. Yet, it appears as though the program took certain precautions in preparation for the dip in returning production. One year ago, the coaching staff decided to preserve that state of the offensive line by redshirting Jonathan Alvarez. Now, the senior is expected to start at center in the upcoming season.
Starting 13 games over the duration of his career, Alvarez’s body of work placed him on the Rimington Award Watch List. Each and every year, the Rimington Award is present to the nation’s premier center. One of 58 added to the list on Friday, Alvarez is also one of five Big 12 centers named.

In a unique twist, the recipient of the award is based upon All-American voting toward the end of the season. Combining the number of first place votes across three separate organizations determines the eventual winner of the Rimington Award.
