News broke earlier in the month that backup center Jonathan Alvarez was retiring from the game due to injuries. Last week the Sooners lost their new back up center when Alex Dalton suffered his third torn ACL since arriving on campus. This puts Oklahoma in a precarious situation should something happen to starter Creed Humphrey.

Oklahoma’s Jonathan Alvarez Retires From Football

A member of the preseason watch list for the Rimington Award, present to the nation’s top center, Alvarez started Oklahoma’s first three games of the season as the anchor of the offensive line before being replaced by redshirt freshman Creed Humphrey. The position battle between Alvarez and Humphrey went deep into the summer and was touted as one of the best battles of fall camp. Ultimately Humphrey’s youth, size, and upside supplanted the experience of Alvarez.

Center Has Been The Most Competitive Position Battle In Oklahoma Football Camp

As good as the competition is between the two signal callers, that hasn’t been the best position battle of camp. According to Riley, that label goes to the center position where senior Jonathan Alvarez and redshirt freshman Creed Humphrey are pushing each other for the starting job.

Oklahoma Isn’t Rebuilding The Offense, They’re Reloading It

The only thing that Oklahoma fans have seen from the offense since the arrival of Lincoln Riley is steady improvement. In 2015, Riley’s first year, the Sooners averaged 43.5 points per game. Over the course of the next two seasons Oklahoma’s offense would progress to where they led all Power 5 schools in points per game in 2017.
