College football season is back which means so is our Friday Locks segment. You know, it’s the weekly post where we show you how much we don’t know about picking games against the spread.
Tell us where you agree and disagree for week one.
Oregon State (+38.5) vs Ohio State | Clearly, the Buckeyes are the more talented team across the board in every imaginable way. Yet to face a FBS program with nearly a 40-point edge seems a bit ridiculous. tOSU wins handily but it’ll be inside of the current spread as the second string gets significant reps.
Washington (+2) vs Auburn | The battle of the week pits two offensive minds against one another. Yet it’ll be the defenses on display in week one. With nine returning starters on that side of the ball, I’m giving the edge to the Huskies this go around.
Maryland (+13.5) vs Texas | How many elite players do you feel you have on this roster that can be difference makers and win championships?…Some. I mean, I don’t know.
Oklahoma (-21) vs Florida Atlantic | I get it. Baker Mayfield is long gone, Kyler Murray is kind of a question mark at quarterback, and Lane Kiffin is doing wonderful things for FAU. That’s all fine and dandy, but I’m not buying this game being any closer than a 5-touchdown game. I’ll take the Sooners by three touchdowns in my sleep.
West Virginia (+9.5) vs Tennessee | I thought I read the line on this game incorrectly, so I had to do a double take, but sure enough, the Volunteers are favored by nearly double digits. How? Playing in Knoxville will be a challenge, sure, especially having to hear “Rocky Top” over and over, but I have a feeling the Mountaineers will not only cover the spread, but they’ll win the game.
Texas @ Maryland (+13.5) | Forget what you’ve heard; Texas is not “back.” They probably will (and should) win this game, but it’s not happening by two touchdowns. The Terps may even steal this one at home.
Washington +2 vs Auburn | This matchup between two top 10 teams is looking like the best of week one. I’m expecting a very close game, but the offense of Washington will outdraw the defense of Auburn for a close win.
Michigan +1 at Notre Dame | Notre Dame seems to be one of those overrated teams in recent years, while Michigan hasn’t quite lived up to the hype lately either. I expect things to change this season for Michigan. I think they win a close one in South Bend.
OU -21 vs FAU | I typically try to stay away from large spreads. However, there is a bit of bad blood between these two teams. Former Oklahoma quarterback Chris Robinson is now the starter for FAU. After talking some trash on twitter, I expect the Sooners to let the Owls have it. Oklahoma wins big in their season opener.
Friday Night Special – Stanford (-14) vs. San Diego State | I’m not sure that I’m understanding this point spread. I should at least be another touchdown higher. Give me Bryce Love and the Cardinal all day in this one.
Maryland (+13.5) vs. Texas | Are the Longhorns a better team than Maryland? Well, they should be. Are they two touchdowns better on the road against Maryland? They’re going to have to prove that. Until then, give me the Terrapins.
Auburn (-2) vs. Washington | This is a big game on a big stage, but it’s in S.E.C. country and the Huskies are traveling a long way to get there. I like the Tigers to cover.
