Let me first start off by making it very clear that not EVERY Sooner fan believes Kyler Murray is the second coming of Baker Mayfield. At the same time, I would guarantee that there is a decent following that believe Murray is going to lead this team to Oklahoma’s next National Championship.
NEWS FLASH
That ain’t happening.
Multiple times during Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic, the announcers said, “Baker Mayfield who?”
Don’t get me wrong: Kyler Murray had an impressive outing. He barely played, and he went 9/11 for 209 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 23 yards. One particularly impressive play was a 15-yard scramble during Oklahoma’s first possession which ended in a touchdown.

Even still, he has barely seen the field, let alone faced off against a quality opponent, so let’s pump the brakes before we try to hand the guy a ticket to New York for the Heisman Ceremony.
Kyler Murray may very well be able to take this Sooner squad to the College Football Playoff, despite what I think, but he’s going to have show a consistent pattern of elevated play before he should even be allowed near a conversation involving Baker Mayfield’s name.
It’s possible that this offense could be better than the one that Baker ran last season. We’re only one game into the season but it is possible.
