Last week news broke that Missouri outside linebackers coach Brian Odom had declined interest/offers to join Alex Grinch on Oklahoma’s defensive coaching staff. Without any certainty as to exactly what happened over the weekend, Odom now appears to be Norman bound.
Odom, the younger brother of Missouri head coach Barry Odom, joined the Tigers staff last February as outside linebackers coach and will most likely carry the same title at Oklahoma. Prior to that he served with OU’s new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch at Washington State as the defensive quality control assistant for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Grinch and Odom had also served together at Missouri when Odom was a graduate assistant.
“He was vital to our staff,” Grinch said when Odom left Washington State for Missouri. “When you have someone who was a head strength coach like he was, he’s basically ran his own football program. It’s a unique deal, only something that a head coach and a head strength coach know about. To run a position room, that becomes a little easier with the background he has. Having that kind of perspective, in terms of motivating and dealing with players on a day-to-day basis, it’s a feather in his cap. Brian is a big detail-oriented guy. We’ll miss him here and I know he’ll do a great job at Mizzou,” Grinch added.
From the sound of that quote it looks like Grinch got exactly who he wanted to fill the void left by the retirement of Tim Kish.
