Depth is quickly becoming a major concern at Oklahoma State University. Last week, Mike Cunningham made the decision to leave the program as the men’s basketball team pressed on. However, that number was cut significantly on Wednesday night as coach Mike Boynton dismissed three others.
Citing a violation of team rules, Michael Weathers, Maurice Calloo, and Kentrevious Jones parted ways with the program. “We have a standard of behaviour that we expect from everyone in our program,” Boynton said of the event. “We’re going to move forward with the people who want to abide by those standards.” After facing adversity all season long, the Cowboys now possess a nine player roster for the remainder of the year.
Under the direction of Boynton, Oklahoma State has posted an 8-9 record thus far with a tough matchup on the horizon. Attempting to change the culture within the locker room, the coach appears to be making the necessary changes. “I wish the others well as the move on,” the coach concluded.
After sitting out due to the transfer rule, expectations ran high for Weathers. The Mid-American Freshman of the Year averaged 16.7 point per game before moving to the Big 12 Conference. Suspended for the season opener, the guard bounced back and became a regular contributor on the roster. Averaging 9.2 points in sixteen games, this loss may take the biggest toll in production on the court of the three.
We’ll see how the program handles the situation as they take on Iowa State this Saturday.
