Adding yet another major award to the already growing collection, Kyler Murray was tabbed the recipient of the Manning Award. Honoring the accomplishments of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning the trophy is given to the nation’s premiere quarterback. Yet, it’s the only award that takes into consideration the bowl performance of each candidate.
The Oklahoma signal caller claimed the award over 10 other finalists including the likes of Tua Tagovailoa and Dwayne Haskins, both Heisman finalists. Behind the effort, the Sooners become the first program to secure two different winners in back-to-back years.
Discussing the decision Archie Manning said, “Week-in and week-out, Kyler Murray made highlight-reel plays for one of the best teams in the country. For the Sooners to lose Baker Mayfield and still make the College Football Playoff shows just how tough and talented he really is. Kyler proved to be a great leader and exceptional athlete and passer worthy of recognition as the top quarterback in the country this year.”
Accounting for 5,632 over the course of the season, Murray set college football ablaze with conversation. Wondering if the success simply came due to a lack of defense in the conference, the quarterback turned the argument on its head in the bowl game. Facing the Alabama Crimson Tide, Murray posted yet another 300/100 game.
Making a declaration for the NFL Draft, the two-sport star remains a polarizing figure on the grid iron.
