After playing in just 31 of the Thunder’s 54 games so far this season, Alex Abrines was waived by the Thunder on Saturday afternoon. The news was first reported by Sham Charania of The Athletic.
Abrines spent all 2 1/2 seasons of his NBA career in Oklahoma City, and he developed an early reputation as a sharpshooter. However, in his 31 games this season, Abrines averaged just 5.3 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting just 35.7% from the field and 32.3% from three.
Starting on Christmas Day, Abrines was inactive for 14 of Oklahoma City’s 22 games, and he only played in 2. While the reasons for his extended absence and eventual release are unclear, one thing is for sure: he will always hold a special place in the hearts of Oklahoma City Thunder fans.
