The Oklahoma Sooners started their weekend off at the Tony Gwynn Classic with a 6-1 win over San Diego. First baseman Tyler Hardman was drove in all six runs, boosted by a grand slam in the seventh inning, and the pitching staff delivered a solid performance from the mound.
Cade Cavalli drew the start for the Sooners on Friday and went seven full innings, striking out seven and allowing just the one run.
Saturday brought a pitcher’s duel against San Diego State with Oklahoma etching out a 1-0 victory. Nathan Wiles struck out 10 batters over seven full innings of work to improve his season record to 2-0. OU’s lone run came in the top of the fifth when Milan Walla knocked in Brady Harlan on a line drive single into center field.
It wasn’t all good news for the Sooners in San Diego as they moved from Saturday’s pitcher’s duel to a Sunday slug-fest against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans blasted their way past OU 8-6 resulting in the first loss of the season for the Sooners.
Oklahoma (6-1) returns to Norman for a two-game series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff that will play Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
