Arizona Cardinals Select Kyler Murray With First Overall Pick In NFL Draft

Former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray wowed the college football world a year after Baker Mayfield had won the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Murray ranked in the top five nationally in passing efficiency (199.2), passing yardage (4,361), passing touchdowns (42, against just seven interceptions), and rushing yards by a quarterback (1,001). He became the second quarterback in FBS history (Deshaun Watson, 2015) to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards.

Not only did Murray duplicate Mayfield’s feat of winning the Heisman trophy, he also took home some other pretty significant postseason hardware. He was named first-team Associated Press All-American and Player of the Year, Davey O’Brien Award winner, and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year after his impressive junior campaign.

Now Murray has duplicated yet another one of Baker Mayfield’s accomplishments by becoming the first overall player selected in the 2019 NFL draft.

With the selection, Oklahoma becomes the first school to have two overall top picks in the draft in back-to-back years at the quarterback position. Murray also becomes the first person to ever be selected in the first round of both the Major League Baseball and NFL drafts.

  • About as calm of a player as you’ll find. You’ll be hard pressed to find video of him ever being rattled which allows him to be a calming influence on his teammates.
  • Possibly the most dangerous quarterback on the scramble in the last twenty years of the NFL.
  • A master at Run/Pass Options.
  • Has the maturity to read through his progressions.
  • Quick release.
  • Has good touch on the ball, especially on deep passes.
  • Has elite speed that can be used in numerous ways.

  • Some will view his size as a weakness.
  • Limited starting experience.
  • Needs to work to decrease (or eliminate) low arm-angle throws.
  • Needs to have the right coordinator and must be committed to framing their offense specifically to Murray’s strengths
