Giselle “G” Juarez and Sydney Romero continued their hot streak through the post season as Oklahoma beat Alabama 3-2 in their opener of the Women’s College World Series.
Romero led-off the bottom of the first with a bloop single to right field. She moved to third on a Fale Aviu single and then home on a sacrifice fly from Caleigh Clifton to give the Sooners an early 1-0 lead.
The Crimson Tide evened the score in the top of the third when Bailey Hemphill singled to shallow right scoring Claire Jenkins. The game wouldn’t remain even very long though.
In her second at bat, Romero tripled off the right field wall putting her on the edge of restoring the lead for the Sooners. She came home three batters later when Jocelyn Alo singled up the middle.
Juarez took control again in the fourth, sitting the Tide down in order and recording her sixth strikeout in the process. Jenkins struck again in the fifth though with a towering home run to center field. Juarez recovered to pick up her seventh and eighth strikeouts and leave two more Alabama runners stranded on base to end the frame.
The hit of the night belonged to Nicole Mendes who sent the ball to the wall in center field for an RBI triple that scored Raegan Rogers.
Oklahoma had two outs when Mendes hit her triple allowing Rogers, who was pinch running for Jocelyn Alo, to score from first.
The Sooners send Alabama to the elimination round on Saturday. The Crimson Tide will play Florida, who was sent into the loser’s bracket by Oklahoma State, who upset the Gators 2-1 in the first game of the evening session on Thursday.
With OU and OSU both advancing to the winner’s bracket, we’re set for a Bedlam Clash at the Women’s College World Series on Friday night. First pitch is set for 8:30 pm (CT).
