The unthinkable happened in the desert as Oklahoma pitcher Shannon Saile was wrung up for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning resulting in a 5-4 upset loss to Long Beach State at the Hillenbrand Invitational.
The Sooners took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth with a three-run blast by Grace Lyons. Then they added another run the top of the seventh to give the appearance of having things firmly under control, especially with Shannon Saile in the pitching circle.
However Long Beach State, playing Oklahoma for the second time this season, was far from being finished. The seventh inning rally started when Saile walked a run in for LBSU’s first score since the second inning. Then a fielding fielding error by Lyons scored another to pull Long Beach to within striking distance at 4-3.
Facing a 1-0 count, sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez blasted a 2-RBI double to right center field for a walk-off win.
Freshman Olivia Reins drew the start for the Sooners. She went 4.1 innings, allowing just one run off four hits while also striking out four batters.
Oklahoma beat LBSU last weekend (10-3) in the Puerto Villarta College Challenge. The Sooners are facing #4 Arizona in Saturday’s second game.
