The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman thinks that Colorado may be looking at Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to fill their vacant head coaching position. I think that would be a waste of time for the Buffs.
Colorado’s vacancy was created when Mel Tucker left Boulder for the Michigan State job. Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy reportedly turned down the job on Thursday night leaving the Buffaloes still searching.
There’s no doubt that Grinch has value. In just one season at Oklahoma he saw the defense improve in just about ever category from the previous year. That alone is going to make a lot of people look his way. That said, if he turned down Washington State, a place he already has a coaching history, then I think there’s little chance he’ll end up in Boulder.
Not that being a head coach wouldn’t be something special, but Grinch is on to something at Oklahoma. He’s surrounded by a great staff, has a solid 2020 recruiting class coming in, and is making a ton of money. Colorado isn’t the type of program that can pull him away from that.
