Let the quarterback battle begin!!
Regardless of how you, or I, feel about Oklahoma’s spring quarterback competition, it is officially underway. Lincoln Riley confirmed on Monday that it is a battle just between Spencer Rattler and Tanner Mordecai and that he’s not interested in adding a grad-transfer to throw in the mix.
“I feel like they’re both ready to be the starting quarterback here,” Riley said. “If we didn’t, we would’ve brought somebody else in.”
Spencer Rattler will be the heavy favorite to win the job. So much so that he currently has the third best odds at winning the Heisman Trophy (14/1). Rattler will be a redshirt freshman in the fall, after making three game appearances in 2019, the most notable was garbage time in the Peach Bowl ahead of Mordecai.
Recruited as a 4-star prospect (ESPN) out of high school, Mordecai will be a redshirt sophomore next season. He made two game appearances in 2018 and six in 2019. He undoubtedly has the experience advantage on Rattler but does he have the same ceiling potential?
Speaking of experience, that very much needs to be on the table for discussion. This is a battle that is sure to go through the summer but whoever wins will be the least experienced quarterback Riley has started at OU. Mordecai has 30 career passing attempts at Oklahoma and Rattler has 11. Riley doesn’t seem to be phased even a little by that though and perhaps Oklahoma fans should feed off his confidence.
“But these guys are ready,” Riley said on Monday. “They’re good enough, they’re talented enough. It’s their time.”
