Oklahoma is scheduled to play Army at West Point in 2020, providing the chance of a lifetime to travel to one of the most unique and historical locations for a college football game. That said, Sooner fans aren’t soon to forget the last time these two teams played either.
On September 22, 2018 Army pushed #5 Oklahoma to the brink of an upset. The Black Knights dominated the time of possession 44:41 to 15:19 and a missed field goal, as time expired, by Austin Seibert resulted in the game moving to overtime.
There’s an old football saying that goes, “four yards and a cloud of dust will get the job done.” That is how Army nearly pulled off the epic upset. The Black Nights ran the ball 73 times in the game and averaged 4.3 yards per attempt.
Still, the Sooners had opportunity to seal the deal in the fourth quarter but a goal line stand and a missed field goal sent the game into overtime. A couple of big defensive plays helped save the Sooners as well as Kenneth Mann picked off a tipped pass late in the fourth quarter and Parnell Motley intercepted Army’s desperation heave in overtime.
Kyler Murray found CeeDee Lamb in the end zone twice, and Carson Meier once, to help prevent an upset that would have certainly derailed OU’s push to the College Football Playoff.
