Mid-Pandemic Oklahoma Sooners Sports Update

‘By September, the World Is Going to Need Football.’

Lincoln Riley said this recently. And he’s right. Especially, in the United States, we are going to need something common and positive to rally around. Something Americans can ban together with; something that brings unity once more. What better thing to do this than sports. And in the USA, football.

What are the top headlines in OU Sports?

After two seasons in the Pac-12 playing for UCLA, Chris Murray has transferred to the Sooners. The 6-foot-2, 298-pound offensive guard was a 4-star recruit and the No. 9 Guard in the nation as per 247Sports ratings. Unfortunately, we won’t see an immediate impact because due to NCAA transfer regulations, Murray will have to sit the 2020 season. But he’ll still have two-full years of eligibility come 2021.

Chris Murray is the second player this year to jump ship from Pasadena and swim for Norman. Theo Howard, WR, was already in the portal and expected to play in 2020. However, he tore his Achilles and would have missed spring camps. But, COVID19 made everyone miss spring ball, so at least Theo won’t be behind any further than anyone else come September, assuming he’s good to go.

Jalen Hurts and the NFL Draft

After getting benched for Tua in the National Championship Game, there were questions abound for Jalen Hurts. But he transferred to OU and had a phenomenal year, and seemed to answer those questions. Still, his NFL draft stock isn’t as high as it was originally thought; he’s not expected to go in the first round.

Bovada sportsbook has NFL draft odds and Hurts is -112 to go in the top 75 picks. So, if you take that bet, you’re getting solid value if you think Hurts will get picked up by some lucky team by the first half of the 3rd round (looking at you Las Vegas Raiders), check out their review before getting into the action.

He’s been criticized for not being able to throw the ball at a level needed for the NFL. In other words, many think that he is one of those great college QBs whose game might not transfer over to the next level. But he’s now working with Quincy Avery, the draft training specialist who got Deshaun Watson and Dwayne Haskins ready for the draft. And by all reports, Hurts
mechanics are looking a lot better.

That said, I’m not sure how much this matters. Look at Lamar Jackson. He went from a glorified running back to perhaps the most productive QB in the NFL in 2019. So, with that alone, I believe that at least one team will try to get Jalen Hurts on their roster within the first 75 picks.

Sooners Baseball Recap

We also had high hopes for baseball in 2020. The Sooners started with a loss in Pensacola, but then reeled off six straight wins over Virginia, Texas Southern, and Illinois State, before the Cardinals finally took a second win away from the Sooners, putting their initial record at 7-2. OU then smashed Arkansas, and then took a close 7-8 loss to the Missouri Tigers to close out the month of February at 8-3.

March was also strong, with wins coming over LSU, Dallas Baptist, and taking two of three in the series versus San Diego State. The final game of the season was a 3-0 victory over UT Arlington in Texas before the season was effectively canceled. We never made it to conference play but the Sooners ended the abbreviated season at 14-4. That said, all seven seniors announced they’ll return in 2021 (thanks to the NCAA granting an extra year to spring athletes), giving us a lot to look forward to next spring when we are no longer under the vice-grip of fear and flu..

Stay safe. Stay inside. And try to make the best of the quarantine, whether self-imposed or mandated by your county or state. Take the opportunity to learn something new, do that thing that you’ve always wanted but never had the time for. Until next time, Boomer Sooner!
