On Saturday evening Caleb Williams hinted, on Twitter, that an announcement was pending soon. While we shouldn’t expect him to make a commitment to a particular school just yet, he could provide some clarity by slimming down his current Top 5.
In his latest weekly update for Sports Illustrated, Williams said that the news would drop, “real soon”.
Williams didn’t mention a particular school or coach in this week’s journal entry. That was a break from the norm as Clemson and Oklahoma had been highlighted the previous two weeks. My honest opinion is that Williams is now focusing on those two schools and shifting away from LSU.
What Williams did mention this week (outside of community service projects which he really should be commended for) is his focus on recruiting defensive players to come with him. If you’re an Oklahoma fan this has to make you both really excited and really nervous because defensive struggles for the Sooners have certainly been in the spotlight during recent seasons.
It’s really been defensive guys, that I’ve been really trying to pick their brains to see where we can all go and have fun, have a good time and play for national championships and ultimately get to that next goal. Masson Smith, out of Louisiana and Korey Foreman, out of California. I’ve been talking to Latrell (McCutchin), out of Texas. Kelvin Gilliam, I’ve been talking to him, out of Va. Clayton Smith, too. JC (Latham), too, we were on FaceTime yesterday. We’re trying to get on the same page and go to the best place for all of us.

Let’s take a closer look at the names that Williams drops here.
Maason Smith is a 5-star defensive tackle committed to LSU.
Korey Foreman is a 5-star defensive end leaning towards USC or Clemson.
Latrell McCutchin is a 4-star corner thought to be heading to Oklahoma.
Kelvin Gilliam is a 4-star defensive end who seems to be warming up to Oklahoma but still very much has his recruiting wide open.
Clayton Smith is a 4-star linebacker who seems destined to play at Texas.
Finally, JC Latham, the only offensive player mentioned here, is a 4-star offensive tackle thought to be heading to Ohio State.
You have to admire the drive that Caleb Williams has to surround himself with guys that he believes he can win with, but you also have to notice that this list of names is all over the place. I’m not saying that Williams can’t bring a group like this together, I certainly think he has the pull and star power to do so, but I am saying that if you’re an Oklahoma fan trying to connect the dots this week then there isn’t a whole lot to work with.
