Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard was awarded the Cornish Trophy on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cornish Trophy is an annual award given to the NCAA’s top Canadian football player, and you will find essentially no argument that Hubbard fits that bill.
In his sophomore season in Stillwater, Hubbard led the FBS in rushing with 2,094 rushing yards and an average of 161.1 yards per game. He also finished the season on an 11-game streak of rushing for at least 100 yards.
After finishing as a finalist for his 2018 season, he won it after an impressive 2019 campaign. Hubbard said, “It’s an honor to represent Canada, Alberta and my family in accepting this award, and acknowledging all the hard work I’ve put in.”
While the award is certainly an honor for Hubbard, it should be noted that this is more of a starting point than a finishing one for the young talent.
The trophy is another addition to Hubbard’s awards for the 2019 season. He was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, and he was selected as a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. He also finished eighth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
Many believe that the Canadian running back should have been a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2019, and while he did not quite make the cut, it’s safe to say that if he follows up his sophomore season with a similar one in 2020, he should definitely be in New York come time for the big award ceremony.
Regardless of what he accomplishes next season, Chuba Hubbard will go down in history as one of the greatest Cowboy running backs of all time, and Oklahoma State fans are excited to see him back in Stillwater for at least one more season.
