At this point there are a ton of names floating out there for the 2021 recruiting cycle, it’s easy to get lost in the woods so to speak. Sifting through the recruits, commitments, and crystal ball predictions makes it a bit mind-numbing to keep up with everyone. That’s why we wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t know who Jalil Farooq is.
A 6-1/200 receiver from Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Dr. Henry Wise High School), Farooq is a 4-star prospect who is ranked as the #6 player from his home state. He’s also a big fan of former Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb.
In a recent interview with Adam Friedman, from Rivals, Farooq said that he hopes to make his decision shortly after the quarantine ends and he can make his campus visits. His final choices for an official visit are down to Maryland, Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Georgia.
Friedman asked about all five schools but Oklahoma was the only one that Farooq spoke about is significant detail. Stating that OU was the only one of the five that he had taken a virtual tour with, he went on to say that he couldn’t believe how impressed he was.
“I never got a chance to visit Oklahoma so the virtual tour, it felt like I was almost there,” Farooq said. “The campus was huge, the workout place was big, everything. It was like…I couldn’t imagine Oklahoma being that, especially I’m excited to visit because CeeDee Lamb is one of my favorite receivers in college football. I kinda look up to him so I wouldn’t mind following in his footsteps and I see the program they’ve got there, it’s a great program.”
Friedman’s question about conversations with coaches brought about another mention of CeeDee Lamb and how Farooq sees himself fitting in with the Sooners.
“I talk with the coaches a lot,” Farooq stated. “They told me that I could be as good as Jeremy…I mean CeeDee Lamb. They told me I can…they say that they see CeeDee Lamb in me. They said they see greatness. They say CeeDee Lamb came into school about 170. They told me they could build me bigger, stronger…make my routes better, get better explosiveness, I could fit in perfect with them.”
That is more than enough to get the attention of Oklahoma fans but if you needed something else to draw you in on this kid then consider this. Top Oklahoma target Caleb Williams and Farooq are good friends and former teammates who have a dream of playing college football together.
“We’ve always talked about this since we were younger,” Farooq said in regards to playing with Williams in college. “It’s kind of like a dream come true. We’ve kind of rounded it down but if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen but we’re trying to work it out.”
It’s no secret that Williams is actively recruiting a host of players to join him at the college he chooses. By admission Farooq is one of the guys in that mix.
“Yeah, it’s pretty high,” was Farooq’s response when asked the final question about the odds of he and Williams playing together in college. To that point, Williams himself even chimed in on Twitter where you can see the complete interview.
Through three seasons of high school ball Farooq has recorded 1,682 receiving yards, 801 rushing yards, and 30 combined touchdowns.
