At the end of the season, Spencer Rattler stepped onto the field for the Oklahoma Sooners in relief of starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts. For many fans, the move immediately removed any doubt of who the starting quarterback would be heading into the 2020 campaign. That trend has continued throughout the spring as Rattler now finds himself holding down the No. 3 spot in the most recent Heisman Odds released by SuperbookUSA.
In 2019, the true freshman appeared in four games in order to maintain a redshirt. Throwing the ball a mere eleven times, Rattler completed seven of those attempts for a 63.6% completion rate and a 155.5 quarterback rating. Hurling a single touchdown pass, it’s clear the tools are in place for Rattler to be successful throughout his career. But, there’s one thing lacking fairly significantly on the quarterback’s resume — experience on the FBS level.
Despite the lack of experience, Rattler sits above of plethora of proven talent from various programs across the country. It’s a testament of the athleticism and arm strength of the former 5-star recruit. Most notably, Rattler’s odds of winning the Heisman Trophy sit just above those of four year starter and Big 12 Conference member, Sam Ehlinger of the Texas Longhorns.
