As preseason award watch lists continue to pour in, names from various programs rejoice. Jelani Woods is the most recent from the Oklahoma State Cowboys to be featured. Added to the Mackey Award Watch List, the tight end is competing for the title of ‘nation’s best’ at the position.
Initially recruited as a quarterback, Woods transitioned to tight end or Cowboy Back as it’s known in and around Stillwater. Earning back-to-back All-Big 12 Honorable Mentions, it’s appears as though the receiver could be primed for a breakout season as a junior in 2020.
Up to this point of his career, Woods receiving numbers have not been eye-popping. That’s due to the coaching staff asking the 6’7″ tight end to do much of the dirty work — blocking. Regardless, the big frame has proven to be a solid option in the passing game with five catches against Baylor during the 2019 campaign.
Continuing to thrive in the role, many expect Woods to take the next step in the process of becoming an All-Conference Tight End. Could it result in a Mackey Award as well?
