Sooners In The Hunt For 4-Star Louisiana Safety Prospect

Oklahoma is far from being finished when it comes to recruiting elite defensive talent for 2021. Over the weekend the Sooners snagged a commitment from the top cornerback prospect from the state of Virginia. Now they’re looking to bolster the secondary with one of the top safety prospects in the nation.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (University Lab High School) prospect Jardin Gilbert released his Top 5 on Sunday afternoon. His list included Oklahoma along with Alabama, Southern, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M.

247Sports has Gilbert ranked as the #9 safety prospect in the country and the #10 overall prospect from the state of Louisiana. With a 6-1/175 frame, the 4-star prospect still has a lot of room to grow and develop his game physically. Don’t let that fool you into thinking he’s just a completely raw talent though. Gilbert’s instincts and versatility are extremely high and he brings a level of physicality that makes him a solid tackler.

Gilbert’s versatility and cover skills leave the door open for him to transition to just about any other position in the defensive secondary. That said, safety is where Oklahoma could use him the most in this current class. Texas A&M just picked up a commitment from Oklahoma standout prep Kendal Daniels to play the safety position which makes having the Aggies in the Top 5 an interesting choice. The Sooners wanted Daniels to play linebacker.
