It’s Game Day, baby!

The time has finally come for the Oklahoma State Cowboys to kickoff the 2020 football season as they host the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Setting the Stage

The 11th-ranked Cowboys enter today’s game as heavy favorites, and many anticipate that they will have their best season in quite some time. The Oklahoma Sooners remain favorites to win the Big 12, but Oklahoma State is considered their top challenger.

In order for the Cowboys to remain in the positive national spotlight, they need to take care of business today. Simply put, they need to take care of the ball, find the end zone early and often, and keep the Golden Hurricane from scoring.

Quarterback Spencer Sanders enters his second year, and there are high hopes that he has progressed and matured into a quality young quarterback. Sanders had a solid season a year ago as a freshman, but he fizzled out at the end due to an injury. Now he’s back better than ever. He’s surrounded by talented playmakers in running back Chuba Hubbard, a dark horse to win the Heisman, and Biletnikoff favorite Tylan Wallace. The offensive line, however, is questionable at best as the Cowboys have seen several players leave for various reasons.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys return an experienced roster with a lot of depth. Defensive end Trace Ford broke into the spotlight last season as a freshman, and I anticipate he will anchor the big guys up front. Linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Amen Ogbongbemiga are season veterans, and they will undoubtedly be the vocal leaders for the defense. In the secondary, Kolby Harvell-Peel, Tre Sterling, and Rodarius Williams are all capable playmakers.

Tulsa has some playmakers themselves in quarterback Zach Smith, running back Shamari Brooks, and wide receiver Keylon Stokes. On the defensive side, linebacker Zaven Collins is a playmaker all over the field. Oklahoma State needs to focus on the task at hand and not overlook the Golden Hurricane, no matter what the expectations are headed into this game.
