Even Without Egbuka Oklahoma’s 2021 Receiving Class Would Be Extremely Strong

According to the latest recruiting rumors Oklahoma football fans may be in for a little disappointment this evening when Emeka Egbuka makes his announcement as to where he’ll play college football. The latest rumblings are that the nation’s top receiver, per 247Sports, is going to choose the scarlet and gray of Ohio State over the crimson and cream of Oklahoma.

It that should be the case then Oklahoma fans have absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of the receiver position. The Sooners currently have a stacked roster of young pass catchers and three other super talented receivers in the recruiting class.

Mario Williams was Oklahoma’s top target at the receiver spot for the 2021 recruiting class. A 4-star prospect and the #4 receiver in the nation, per 247Sports, the Sooners secured his commitment on May 15.

The commitment of Williams came a month after Oklahoma received a pledge from 4-star Richmond, Texas receiver Cody Jackson. Ranked as the #15 receiver prospect in the country and the #17 overall prospect from the state of Texas, Jackson turned down the likes of Alabama to commit to the Sooners on April 14th.

Jalil Farooq is the latest, and most likely last, receiver to join Oklahoma’s 2021 class. Another 4-star recruit, Farooq is ranked by 247Sports composite as the #21 receiver in the country and the #6 overall prospect from the state of Maryland.

The Remaining Key To The Class Isn’t Even A Receiver

Don’t get me wrong, Egbuka could have been or will be a nice addition to Oklahoma’s 2021 class depending on how is announcement goes. However, he’s not a make or break guy for the Sooners in 2021. The key to this class has yet to publicly make his commitment and he’s not a receiver.

As established, the Sooners have a super talented trio of receivers in the class. They also have the top quarterback prospect for 2021 committed and recruiting hard in their favor. Oklahoma has one offensive lineman already committed, with more likely coming in a few weeks. What they don’t have yet is a running back and that’s why the focus for what’s remaining of this recruiting cycle should be on 4-star Garland, Texas running back Camar Wheaton.

With a commitment date set for December 23rd, Wheaton is definitely the guy who could make or break this class more than any other uncommitted prospect out there. Rated as a 5-star composite prospect, he’s the #2 running back for 2021 and the #4 overall player from the state of Texas.

There are currently nine crystal ball predictions for Wheaton from 247Sports and all of them are in favor of Oklahoma. That’s the good news that should help compensate for possibly losing what could be the fourth receiver commitment of the recruiting class.
