With thirteen Big 12 championships over the last twenty years it would take up way too much time to pull a highlight from each one. Besides, some of those championships came at the hands of blowout wins over Colorado and Missouri and others were decided during the hiatus of the championship game. What we’ve done is narrowed down five moments that we believe are key moments in a championship game that will go down in Sooner lore as some of the all-time greatest moments. Are there some that we missed? Of course there are! Tell us about them in the comments section below!
#4 Kyler Murray To Grant Calcaterra In 2018
The Sooners were out for revenge when they traveled to Arlington in 2018. A narrow loss to Texas during the regular season had placed the Longhorns as the top seed in the conference and it gave Oklahoma the headhunter mentality in the road whites.
A slow start by OU gave Texas a 14-6 advantage with eleven minutes and some change remaining in the second quarter. That’s when Kyler Murray took over, throwing touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and Grant Calcaterra before the half to give the Sooners a 20-14 advantage at the break.
Texas came back strong in the third quarter to send the game into the final fifteen minutes all tied up. A 31-yard Austin Seibert field goal and a sack of Sam Eglinger, by Tre Brown for a safety (a play that could easily be a Top 5 moment itself) gave the Sooners a 5-point lead.
The best was yet to come though as Murray was going to find Calcaterra one more time to seal the Longhorns fate and send Oklahoma back to the College Football Playoff.
While Calcaterra’s career at Oklahoma ended prematurely his legacy has been forever etched in the crimson and cream stone of Sooner football history.
“That catch will live on in Oklahoma history forever.”
