The Oklahoma Sooners currently have 16 signees in the 2021 Recruiting Class. Lacking a running back, many speculate that the program must return to the JUCO ranks in order to secure a commitment including Rivals. However, I believe there is another option on the table that isn’t being talked about as frequently.
Insert L.J. Johnson into the equation. A native of Cypress, Texas, the running back holds a 4-star rating in the 247Sports composite. Despite being the No. 8 overall prospect in the state, Johnson is the No. 40 overall recruit in the country. Yet, the best part of the situation is that the high school star has not committed to a program as a member of the 2021 Recruit Class.
While the Texas Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies have been courting the talents of Johnson for quite some time, the Oklahoma Sooners were listed in the top four. Sure, that may have been back in September but it indicates a mutual interest. As long as both parties remain involved, there’s no reason to pass on the talented ball carrier.
One thing I can get on board with is the statement, “running back is necessary, but it can’t be just to fill up a depth chart” as mentioned by Bob Pryzbylo. Until Johnson or Oklahoma mentions a lack of interest it’s time to go all-in on the back.
