Sooners Look To Be Frontrunners For Tennessee Transfer Running Back

While Oklahoma basketball was beating Texas on the hardwood Tuesday night, Sooner football appears to have beaten the Longhorns on the recruiting trail as well. After reportedly narrowing his choice down to Oklahoma or Texas, recruiting website 247Sports gave OU a crystal ball prediction to land highly coveted transfer running back Eric Gray.

While crystal ball predictions have largely proven to not be a sure thing, it should also be noted that Oklahoma has already benefitted from Tennessee transfers Wanya Morris and Key Lawrence. Adding Gray to the Knoxville pipeline would come as a shock at all. He would also bring an immediate boost to a running back room that lost TJ Pledger to the transfer portal and Rhamondre Stevenson to the NFL.

The 2019 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Tennessee, Gray ran for 2,499 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior to smash the state record for career touchdowns at 138.

The first-ever three-time Mr. Football Award winner in the state of Tennessee, Gray selected Tennessee over the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Alabama and 20 other offers.

Ironically, Oklahoma didn’t offer him out of high school but the Sooners are certainly interested now. In two seasons with the Vols he rushed for 1,311 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2020 he recorded 173 rushing yards against Auburn for his season-high performance in a single game.

Among his collegiate honors are the 2020 Gator Bowl MVP and 2019 PFF Freshman All-American. He absolutely looks to be a “plug and play” addition to whichever team he chooses to transfer to. Let’s just hope that team is Oklahoma!
