There’s no denying that Billy Bowman is a special talent especially on the gridiron.
A four-star athlete and No. 43 overall recruit in the 2021 recruiting class, Bowman gained the attention of high-major programs from across the country. A legitimate two-way player, the true freshman signed with the Oklahoma Sooners. Now, Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch must decide where the athlete will shine for the foreseeable future.
It’s not an easy decision.
However, what everyone around the program — fans included — knows is that there is plenty of opportunity on the defensive side of the ball. Most notably, Grinch and the rest of the coaching staff are looking for a viable nickelback. Without an incumbent at the position, it’s clearly up for grabs and Bowman appears to be cemented in the battle.
Time and time again, it’s been said that the best players will find a way onto the field. Despite the position ambiguity surrounding the talents of Bowman, the youngster is heading in that general direction. Sure, the early enrollee could easily play slot receiver, become an all-purpose back, or fill multiple roles in the secondary. But for now, the former 4-star recruit is being taken under the wing of Grinch.
It’s not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination. Key Lawrence is also competing for a spot in the secondary. Although the name hasn’t been mentioned much in relation to the NB position, it seems like an obvious fit for the transfer. Expect this battle to rage in well into the summer if not the fall.
Still, Bowman is a name Oklahoma fans will become familiar with sooner rather than later…no pun intended.
