Possessing an impressive and unrivaled resumé, Lon Kruger landed in Norman as the next head basketball coach following the 2010-11 season. Needing a culture shift, the experienced head coach immediately put in the work to do just that. Recruiting quality players of character, the Oklahoma Sooners returned to the Final Four during the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Once again appearing in the Big Dance at the close of the 2020-21 year, Coach Kruger helped his players to realize their dream. Now, the head coach will retire according to multiple sources. The move isn’t totally unexpected knowing Kruger began his head coaching career nearly 40 years ago at Texas-Pan America.
Appearing in seven of the past eight NCAA Tournaments, Kruger owns a 60.9% win rate. As the 27th winningest coach in college basketball, it’s hard to say goodbye. But, it’s certainly a well deserved break for one of the most professional coaches to ever take up the mantle.
