After a scoring a series win during a top ten showdown, the Oklahoma Sooners are adding a couple more accolades on the year. Sweeping the Big 12 Weekly Honors, the set features a pair of freshmen phenoms in Nicole May and Jayda Coleman.

Anchoring the pitching staff, May stepped into the circle during critical moments of each game over the weekend. In game two, young hurler collected the first save of her career during Bedlam Series after making quick work of three batters in the seventh inning. Clearly calm and collected, it wouldn’t have surprised many to see her again in the finale. Despite not earning a start, May secured a win after entering game three in the bottom of the third inning. In a bases loaded situation, May struck out the final batter while leaving the inherited runners stranded on base. The effort propelled the pitcher to a 4.1 inning performance with one run allowed on three hits.

Additionally, Coleman provided the sparks at the plate. Swinging a powerful bat, the freshman ended the weekend behind a .625 average. Despite the single home run during the series, the youngster accounted for six RBIs. However, her defensive play from centerfield may be the bigger story from the weekend.

Moving into the Big 12 Tournament, it’s clear that Patty Gasso has a talented group of freshmen that came ready to compete. After securing a ninth consecutive regular season title, with the Sooner follow it up as tournament champions? Bet on a Bedlam showdown to decide it all once again this upcoming event!
