Keep the top talent in the state! That’s pretty much the mantra for any college football staff when it comes to recruiting. You have to start local and work your way out from there. After having missed out on the top player in the state of Oklahoma in three of the last four years the Sooners seemed not only locked in on the top two players in the state for 2022 but gaining significant momentum.
A coaching change at USC seems to have drawn the attention of Gentry Williams fully back to Oklahoma, so much so that even USC Insider Gerard Martinez cast a crystal ball prediction on Tuesday for the Booker T. Washington product commit to the Sooners.
Rated as the top prospect from the state, and the #3 overall corner in the class, Williams has 18 scholarship offers to choose from. It had appeared that his recruitment had come down between the Sooners and Trojans but the firing of Clay Helton in Los Angeles, and Williams’ campus visit to Norman on September 17th, have Oklahoma looking pretty good at the moment. Don’t sleep on Arkansas, Florida, and LSU though. All three are still pursuing him pretty heavily.
Speaking of on-campus visits, Owasso’s Chris McClellan was in Norman for the West Virginia game and has since received crystal ball predictions to play for the Sooners. One of those came from Ohio State Insider Bill Kurelic and the reason that is significant is because McClellan is though to be down between Oklahoma and the Buckeyes for his decision.
With a whopping 35 scholarships offers on the table, McClellan has experienced a boom in his recruitment. The 6-3/295 product from Owasso is ranted as the #2 player in the state of Oklahoma for the 2022 cycle and is the #14 overall defensive lineman in the class. While Oklahoma appears to be edging out Ohio State at the moment, Alabama and Florida are also still in hot pursuit.
