Texas Tech has fired Matt Wells after a 13-17 record with the Red Raiders.
Wells was in his third season in Lubbock. The team was 5-3 this year, but the 7-16 record in Big 12 games, and the 14 point lead that was blown on Saturday was enough for Texas Tech to part ways.
He was already on the hot seat coming into the year after going 4-6 last season. He fired offensive coordinator David Yost, and replaced him with Sonny Cumbie.
Cumbie played quarterback at Texas Tech for Mike Leach from 2000-2004. He was an assistant for the Red Raiders from 2009-2013, and then went on to coach at TCU under Gary Patterson. This season he returned to be the offensive coordinator in Lubbock.
Sonny Cumbie has been named the interim coach and his first task will be to take on the Sooners in Norman. Oklahoma has been limping their way through the last few games and desperately need the bye week that’s coming after Texas Tech. Perhaps with the staff change in Lubbock the Sooners will get their opportunity to cruise into their week off.
