The 2021 season hasn’t been kind to Oklahoma receiver Theo Wease. An injury, suffered in fall camp, kept him on the sideline all season and then the coach that had recruited him, Dennis Simmons, bolted for Los Angeles. As if that weren’t enough, recruiting classmates Spencer Rattler, Austin Stogner, and Jadon Haselwood all left Norman for other destinations. It’s no wonder the former composite 5-star recruit entered his name into the transfer portal on December 1st.
However, that was then and this is now. Less than a month after Lincoln Riley changed zip codes the Oklahoma program is absolutely once again on solid ground. The Sooners currently have a Top 10 recruiting class and one of the first calls that new head coach Brent Venables made was to offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. It’s the latter of those two things that most likely resulted in Wease’s announcement on Friday that he’s exiting the transfer portal and staying in Norman.
One of the more innovative offensive minds in the college game, Lebby is worth every bit of of his $2 million dollar salary. It’s likely that Caleb Williams is going to return to quarterback the team and Wease gives another star-caliber receiver in the arsenal. In 2020 Wease tied for the team-lead with 37 receptions, going for 530 yards and four touchdowns.
