Alabama Transfer Linebacker Looks To Be Down To Sooners Or Longhorns

Update: Since publishing this post, Sanders has committed to Arkansas.

247Sports has former Alabama linebacker Drew Sanders ranked as the #4 overall player currently in the transfer portal and it appears as if the one-time 5-star recruit is deciding between Oklahoma and Texas. Both the Sooners and Longhorns received crystal ball predictions for Sanders in the last week, with OU picking up the most recent one today.

Ranked as the top player from the state of Texas for the 2020 recruiting class, Sanders chose Alabama from among his 20 scholarship offers. Oklahoma had been in on him during that time, recruiting him as a tight end. After appearing in 12 games this last season, with three starts, Sanders hit the transfer portal after suffering a hand injury that ultimately led to the rise of Dallas Turner as the starting Sam linebacker for the Tide.

Cale Gundy had been a key part of Sanders’ recruitment out of high school and while he’s on the opposite side of the ball than what Gundy coaches it certainly doesn’t hurt that there’s some sense of familiarity for him with the new Oklahoma coaching staff. In addition to Oklahoma and Texas, Arkansas has also made a strong push for him as well.

So far OU has added quarterback Dillon Gabriel, offensive lineman McKade Mattauer, tight end Daniel Parker, defensive lineman Jonah Laulu, linebacker T.D. Roof, and defensive lineman Jeffrey Johnson from the transfer portal. The Sooners rank #7 in the 247Sports Transfer Rankings.
