Could Bedlam Football 2022 Be a Top-5 Matchup?

The Associated Press and Coaches Polls came out yesterday, and after several top 10 teams dealt with upsets over the weekend, the rankings look a bit different headed into Week 3.

No. 6 Texas A&M lost to unranked Appalachian State, no. 8 Notre Dame lost to unranked Marshall, and no. 9 Baylor lost to no. 21 BYU. On the other side of things, both no. 7 Oklahoma and no. 11 Oklahoma State handled their opponents with ease, and a result, they saw positive movement in the polls.

After a slow start against Kent State, the Sooners picked up the pace and soundly defeated the Golden Flashes 33-3. The impressive win moved Oklahoma up to no. 6 in the AP Poll—trailing no. 5 Clemson by fewer than a hundred votes—and in the Coaches Poll, as well.

The Cowboys trailed Arizona State 3-0 early in their game, but it didn’t take long for the offense to start cooking behind Spencer Sanders’s dynamic play. The result was a 34-17 victory, and Oklahoma State saw a nice little jump in the polls. The Cowboys moved from 11 to 8 in the AP Poll and from 10 to 7 in the Coaches Poll.

The Sooners and the Cowboys are the two top-ranked teams in the Big 12, and after Baylor’s loss, the two Oklahoma teams should be considered the favorites to land in the Big 12 Championship. The Bedlam matchup is scheduled for November 19th, the second-to-last week of the regular season, and if all goes well for both teams, we could be looking at a top-5 matchup in Norman.
