MLB Best Bet For August 20, 2023 | Phillies vs. Nationals

Back-to-back trifecta’s and an 8-1 record since Thursday have turned our week around and put us on the plus side. Yesterday we hit all three of our bets on the Mariners and Astros. Now 11-7 on the week and looking to build on our $19.62 in earnings (Had we been making $10 bets) with the rubber-match between Philadelphia (67-56) and Washington (56-68) tonight.

The Pitchers

Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler (9-5, 3.63 ERA) has picked up two wins over his last five starts, and he’s gone at least six innings in each of those appearances. He’s allowing an average of just 1.6 earned runs per start during that stretch and has a combined 34 strikeouts.

Opposing Wheeler is Washington’s Trevor Williams (5-7, 5.20 ERA) who also has two wins over his last five appearances. Williams hasn’t made it through four innings in each of his last three starts and he’s allowing an average of 4.4 earned runs per appearance during that stretch.

The Line Ups

Kyle Schwarber leads the Phillies with 32 home runs. Bryson Scott paces the team with a .296 batting average, and Nick Castellanos has knocked in 74 RBI. Philadelphia has scored 29 runs over the last five games.

Lane Thomas is the key to Washington’s lineup. He leads the Nationals with 20 home runs and a .287 batting average. Joey Meneses leads the team with 69 RBI. Washington has scored31 runs over the last five games.

The Streaks

Philadelphia has won two of its last three games, including Saturday night over the Nationals.

Washington has won three of its last four games, with the only loss in that stretch being Saturday’s game against the Phillies.

The Odds

Phillies -1.5

Phillies -220 on the moneyline

O/U 8.5

The under is a dangerous bet here, but it could also be rewarding because we’re getting +100 odds and I think there’s a real possibility this game could sneak under the 8.5 runs. That’s my best bet of the night for this game. I like the Nationals to keep it within the +1.5 run total but I’ll take the Phillies on the moneyline due to the pitching advantage.
