Sooners Land Another Futurecast Prediction, Eyeing Top Safety Target

The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a hot start on the recruiting trail for the 2025 class, currently boasting a top-10 class according to 247Sports and sitting at No. 2 in the SEC after the commitment of four-star running back Tory Blaylock.

This week, the Sooners coaching staff continued to add to their momentum by landing a futurecast prediction from Rivals’ Parker Thune favoring Oklahoma for safety Marcus Wimberly.

Wimberly: A Top Safety Target

A coveted four-star safety from Arkansas, Wimberly is ranked No. 9 at his position and is a crucial target for the Sooners’ secondary. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Oklahoma a slight edge over Michigan in the race for Wimberly’s commitment.

Challenges on the Horizon

While the Sooners are in a good position, landing Wimberly won’t be a cakewalk. They’ll face stiff competition from the defending national champions, Michigan, and the in-state Arkansas Razorbacks. The decision will likely hinge on Wimberly’s desire to stay close to home.

Numbers Game: Quality Over Quantity

Head Coach Brent Venables has already emphasized that the 2025 class will be smaller than usual, prioritizing quality over quantity. With a potential commitment from five-star safety Jonah Williams already on the table, questions arise about how many safeties the Sooners plan to take in this cycle.

Wimberly’s Versatility: A Multi-Sport Athlete

Beyond his skills on the gridiron, Wimberly is a multi-sport athlete who also excels in baseball and track and field. His athleticism is evident in his impressive sprint times (11.45 in the 100m and 23.61 in the 200m) and his diverse playing experience on the field. As a junior, he saw significant snaps at receiver, quarterback, as well as in the secondary.

Looking Ahead: Closing the Deal

The Sooners have positioned themselves well in the race for Wimberly’s commitment. Now, it’s all about closing the deal and convincing him that Oklahoma is the best place for him to develop as a player and a person.
