Sooners Fall Short in Austin, Drop Series to Texas (2-1)
The No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners’ remarkable run came to a crashing halt on Sunday, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to No. 5 Texas in a thrilling rubber match to close out the series in Austin.
Missed Opportunities Haunt Oklahoma
Despite a valiant effort, the Sooners’ bats went cold at crucial moments, leaving eight runners stranded on base. Freshman Ella Parker provided a lone bright spot offensively, launching a solo homer in the 3rd inning to give Oklahoma an early lead. However, Texas answered back in the 4th with a two-run homer, putting the Longhorns ahead for good.
Stellar Pitching on Both Sides
Both teams’ pitching staffs were locked in a duel throughout the contest. Sooner starter Kelly Maxwell struck out six batters but surrendered two crucial runs. Freshman reliever Estelle Czech came on for Texas in the 4th inning and shut down the Sooners’ offense, allowing only two hits over the final 3.1 innings to secure the victory.
End of an Era
This loss marks the end of an era for Oklahoma. It snaps their incredible 11-year streak of winning Big 12 regular-season series and their first back-to-back losses since 2020.
Looking Ahead
While the sting of defeat is fresh, the Sooners (35-3, 13-2) still control their own destiny in the Big 12 race. They hold a one-game lead over Oklahoma State and a two-game advantage over Texas heading into a midweek matchup at Wichita State on Tuesday. Oklahoma will look to regroup and bounce back as they return home for a Big 12 series against BYU this weekend.
