The Oklahoma Sooners are firing on all cylinders on the recruiting front. Following a busy March visit window, Coach Brent Venables and his staff reeled in two impactful defensive commitments on Wednesday, solidifying their already impressive 2025 class.
Defensive Line Gains a Versatile Piece in Trent Wilson
Trent Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive lineman from Wise (Md.) High School, brings a blend of power and athleticism to the Sooners’ defensive line. Despite missing the first half of his junior season with an injury, Wilson showcased his disruptive ability, racking up 12 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks in the class 4A state championship game.
Wilson’s upside is undeniable. Analysts project him as a future interior defender who can contribute in multiple roles. His impressive wingspan and frame suggest he has the potential to add significant size and power in a college strength and conditioning program. This versatility is a key asset for Defensive Line Coach Todd Bates, who has a history of developing versatile and disruptive defensive linemen at Oklahoma.
The commitment holds particular significance considering Wilson’s strong connection to the Sooners’ coaching staff. He built a strong bond with Coach Bates during a January visit, solidifying his belief in Oklahoma’s ability to develop him as a player. Wilson joins fellow defensive linemen Alexander Shieldnight and Ka’Mori Moore in the 2025 class, forming a promising core for the Sooners’ future defensive front.
Maliek Hawkins: Adding Depth and Familiarity to the Secondary
Maliek Hawkins, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from Mansfield (Texas) Legacy High School, brings not only talent but also a rich Sooner family legacy. The son of former Oklahoma defensive back Mike Hawkins and brother of current quarterback Michael Hawkins, Maliek brings a deep understanding of the Sooner program and its culture.
Ranked as a top-70 cornerback nationally by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, Hawkins boasts impressive press coverage skills. He also possesses the versatility to play safety and nickel back, adding valuable depth and flexibility to the Sooners’ secondary. Hawkins’ confidence in his abilities is a welcome addition to the defensive backfield, particularly as the Sooners look to replace graduating seniors.
Beyond his on-field talent, Hawkins brings a strong recruiting presence. He highlights the positive experiences he had when visiting Oklahoma, particularly connecting with current defensive backs Woodi Washington and Gentry Williams. His familiarity with other Dallas-area recruits is expected to be a valuable asset as the Sooners look to continue building their 2025 class.
Looking Ahead: A Class on the Rise
The commitments of Wilson and Hawkins elevate the Sooners’ 2025 class to one of the nation’s best. With 12 pledges already, Oklahoma boasts the most commitments among SEC programs, and their class currently ranks No. 6 nationally. Both Wilson and Hawkins are expected to be vocal leaders in recruiting efforts, further bolstering the Sooners’ chances of landing additional top prospects.
The focus on defense with these latest additions reflects Coach Venables’ defensive philosophy. By prioritizing talented and versatile defenders early in the recruiting cycle, the Sooners are laying the foundation for a dominant defensive unit for years to come. With a strong nucleus in place, Oklahoma’s 2025 recruiting class is poised to become a cornerstone for the program’s future success.
