Sooner Squad Bolstered by Big Pickup: Wague Brings Size and Athleticism to OU Frontcourt

Fresh off another successful foray into the transfer portal, Oklahoma Basketball Coach Porter Moser has his sights set on a new challenge – the rigors of the SEC. A key piece of that puzzle arrived on Tuesday with the commitment of Alabama transfer Mo Wague. The arrival of the 6-foot-10 forward addresses a critical need for the Sooners and injects a potent dose of size and athleticism into their frontcourt.

Why Wague is a Good Fit

With the departure of John Hugley, the Sooners were searching for a big man to complement Sam Godwin. Wague brings the physical presence Oklahoma craved. He’s a capable scorer around the rim and has shown the ability to be a rim protector and a lob threat. In limited minutes at Alabama, Wague displayed flashes of his potential, including a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) against Kansas State.

What to Expect from Wague

While Wague’s stats at Alabama weren’t eye-popping due to a crowded frontcourt, his time at West Virginia (4.1 points, 3.1 rebounds) and Harcum College (14.8 points, 11.9 rebounds) suggests he can be a productive contributor. Look for him to battle Godwin for minutes and provide a defensive presence in the paint.

What This Means for the Roster

Wague joins a group of guards brought in by Moser this offseason – Duke Miles (High Point), Kobe Elvis (Dayton), Jadon Jones (Long Beach State), and Brycen Goodine (Fairfield). This influx of talent addresses the perimeter scoring and defense that was lacking last season. With Wague’s addition, the Sooners appear to have a well-rounded roster with a strong backcourt and a bolstered frontcourt.

Looking Ahead

While forward Jalon Moore declared for the NBA Draft but retained his NCAA eligibility, Wague’s arrival likely fills the final scholarship spot for the Sooners. Coach Moser’s successful use of the transfer portal has addressed key weaknesses and positioned Oklahoma for a competitive run in the SEC. Sooner fans can be excited about a more athletic and deeper team in the upcoming season.
