Three Guys & Three Questions | Thunder vs. Mavs Game 5
Home Court Advantage: How will the Oklahoma City crowd impact the game? The Thunder will be back home for Game 5 with a potentially raucous crowd behind them. Can they leverage this home-court advantage to establish an early lead and dictate the tempo of the game, or will the Mavericks be able to weather the storm and steal a crucial victory on the road?
Craig: There’s no doubt the crowd will be pumped up in OKC. This young team has had issues settling in during the early period of the game. The team needs to come out poised and not let the energy in the arena get them out of sorts. Just stay the course, and let the crowd drown out the Mavericks.
Matt: Earsplitting cheers are guaranteed in OKC for Game 5. Their 33-8 home record this season speaks for itself. Fueled by a desire to avenge their lone home playoff loss (Game 2), the crowd will create a thunderous atmosphere (see what I did there?) that energizes OKC and potentially disrupts the Mavericks’ communication and game plan.
Zack: Winning Game 4 preemptively set the tone for OKC in Game 5. Regaining home court was an absolute necessity, and now that the Thunder have done that, the fans will need to do their job. I have no doubt they will show up in full force for Game 5, and if Dallas shows even the slightest sign of weakness, they might get run over.
Adjustments and Counter-Adjustments: Who adapts better? Both teams displayed adjustments through the first four games of the series. In Game 5, which team will be more effective in making adjustments and countering their opponent’s strategies?
Craig: The Mavericks have been setting the tone when it comes to adjustments in this series. However, I think that changes in game 5. I believe the Thunder will debut a new starting lineup in this game. I’d like to continue to see the Thunder go at Luka on the offensive side of the court. Defensively, the corner three was a big issue in the first few games of this series. The Thunder made some adjustments, but then began to get exposed on the pick and roll. I fully expect Coach Daigneault to have the answers to both of those problems moving forward in this series.
Matt: The chess match of adjustments continues in a pivotal Game 5. The Thunder’s physical defense stifled Luka Doncic in Game 4, and they’ll look to capitalize on that success with even sharper execution at home. However, Dallas faces a daunting task. They need to adapt their strategy on the road in a hostile environment, finding solutions to the Thunder’s physicality and containing the unstoppable force of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. While both teams can adjust, the Thunder’s momentum and home-court advantage might be the deciding factors in this battle of counter-tactics.
Zack: It feels like OKC has made mostly great adjustments all series long, but none of that matters if the execution is subpar. The Thunder’s inability to knock down shots has been the focus, but OKC has other areas that need attention. Dallas done a pretty good job defensively, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has managed to have his way. I don’t think there’s much more the Mavs can do with him. All in all, I think Dallas needs to make more adjustments, but I don’t know if they can. Meanwhile, the Thunder seem like they need to tweak a few areas, but I’m not sure they will.
Emerging Role Players: Who will step up as the “X-Factor”? While stars like Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be counted on for big performances, role players can often be the difference in a close playoff game. Which role player on each team will emerge as the “X-Factor” and contribute key baskets, rebounds, or defensive plays to swing the momentum in their favor?
Craig: The role player I most likely see making an impact for the Mavericks in game 5 is Tim Hardaway Jr. The Thunder did a great job at limiting him in game 4, but he did manage to pop off for 17 in the Mavs big win in game 2. Bench scoring has been limited for both teams in this series. If either team has a guy come off the bench and put up solid numbers it could be the difference maker.
As for the Thunder, I’m going with Jalen Williams. I’m not sure if you consider him a role player as he is much closer to a “star” in my opinion. But, he has been struggling thus far against the Mavericks. I expect J Dub to bounce back and give the Thunder a giant boost in this one.
Matt: For the Thunder, Jalen Williams, despite being a key contributor throughout the season, has struggled against the Mavericks’ defense. A breakout performance from him, with increased scoring and confidence, would provide a significant offensive boost for Oklahoma City. On the Dallas side, Tim Hardaway Jr. has been relatively quiet after a strong showing in Game 2. If the Thunder’s defense continues to limit Luka Doncic, Hardaway Jr.’s ability to step up and hit shots off the bench could be the difference for the Mavericks. Both players have the potential to swing the momentum of the game, making them names to watch in this crucial matchup.
Zack: Jalen Williams isn’t exactly a role player, but OKC needs him to step up in a major way. He hasn’t played anywhere near his capabilities, and if he does, there’s no telling how far the Thunder can go.
As for Dallas, I’m not sure their role players can step up much more. PJ Washington has been a sharpshooter, hitting well above his typical average, and the Mavs have seen at least some production from basically everyone. Tim Hardaway is a guy I would keep an eye on, though. He can pop off with a good stat line in any given night, and if Dallas needs somebody, he’s experienced enough to stand up to the challenge.
