A Day of Onslaught: Reliving the Historic 1980 Oklahoma Rout of Colorado
October 4th, 1980, was a day etched in history for its offensive explosion – the “Boulder Shootout” as it came to be known. The final score, a staggering 82-42 in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners, tells the story of a game that shattered records and left the Colorado Buffaloes reeling.
A Brief Colorado Spark Quickly Extinguished
Early on, a glimmer of hope flickered for Colorado. Freshman Walter Stanley electrified the crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, momentarily narrowing Oklahoma’s lead to just 7 points. However, the Sooners responded swiftly, showcasing their offensive prowess with a touchdown run by Buster Rhymes. Colorado managed another score late in the first half, but the momentum wouldn’t last.
The Sooners Unleash an Offensive Juggernaut
The second half became a one-sided affair. Oklahoma’s offense was unstoppable, amassing a jaw-dropping 48 points. The Sooners’ dominance was evident in the statistics – 758 rushing yards on 73 carries, along with 117 passing yards for a total of 875 yards of offense. They never punted and only two fumbles prevented an even more lopsided score.
Records Tumble Like Dominoes
The game became a record-breaker. A combined 124 points scored established a new NCAA record (since surpassed in 2001). The 18 total touchdowns were another new benchmark. Individual and team records fell like dominoes: most rushing yards for a Colorado opponent (Oklahoma’s David Overstreet with 258), most points allowed in a game by the Buffalos, and most rushing yards allowed by Colorado in a game.
A Day to Forget for Colorado, But a Glimpse of Hope for the Future
For Colorado fans, it was a day of utter disappointment. However, a small consolation was that the state’s other teams (Air Force and Colorado State) also suffered losses that weekend. Looking ahead, the 42 points scored against Oklahoma, while a losing effort, surprisingly tied the most Colorado had ever managed against the Sooners.
The 1980 “Boulder Shootout” remains a historic moment in college football. It was a day of offensive fireworks, shattered records, and a stark display of Oklahoma’s dominance.
