Billy Sims wasn’t always a football star. Born in St. Louis and raised in Texas, his early passion was baseball, not the gridiron. But after switching to football in high school, his talent exploded. He holds the Texas state record for most consecutive 100-yard rushing games (38!) and racked up a staggering 7,738 rushing yards.
He arrived at Oklahoma in 1975 but faced early setbacks due to injuries. These setbacks, however, proved a blessing in disguise. A medical redshirt year allowed him to recover fully, and in 1978, he unleashed his fury on college football.
The 1978 season was magical for Sims. Nicknamed the “Hookstown Hurricane,” he carved through defenses, setting the Big Eight single-season rushing record with 1,762 yards and a whopping 20 touchdowns. He averaged over 7 yards per carry and led the Sooners to a 10-1 record. This electrifying performance earned him the prestigious Heisman Trophy, becoming the 6th junior and 3rd Sooner to do so.
His dominance continued in 1979. Though he narrowly missed a second Heisman (finishing runner-up to Charles White), Sims rushed for 1,506 yards, showcasing his incredible consistency. He finished his college career with a staggering 4,118 rushing yards, placing him first in Oklahoma history.
Sims’ talent translated seamlessly to the NFL. Drafted first overall by the Detroit Lions in 1980, he rushed for over 1,300 yards and earned Rookie of the Year honors. Sadly, a knee injury cut his promising career short in 1984.
Despite the shortened career, Billy Sims’ legacy is undeniable. He’s an Oklahoma legend, a Heisman winner, and a member of both the College and Oklahoma Football Halls of Fame. His electrifying runs and captivating story continue to inspire Sooner fans everywhere.
