2024 Heartland Sports College Football Preseason Top 25 | #22 Kansas Eyes Big 12 Title with Veteran Offense

The Kansas Jayhawks are on the cusp of something special. With a veteran-laden squad returning from a near-breakthrough season, Head Coach Lance Leipold’s team has a legitimate shot at a Big 12 title in 2024.

Explosive Offense Hinges on Healthy Jalon Daniels

The key to Kansas’ offensive success lies with quarterback Jalon Daniels, the 2023 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Unfortunately, Daniels’ back injury limited him last season. If healthy, he’ll orchestrate a potent offense featuring a deep receiving corps and a talented running back in Devin Neal, on track to become the program’s all-time leading rusher. The arrival of former 5-star prospect Logan Brown at left tackle further bolsters the offensive line, while new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes (formerly of Baylor) is expected to maintain a similar offensive philosophy to the successful system already in place.

Defense Needs Answers Up Front

The Jayhawks’ defense made strides in 2023, but key departures have created some uncertainty. While the secondary boasts two of the Big 12’s best cornerbacks in Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson, the defensive line requires reinforcements to replace impactful seniors. Three of the four defensive line spots appear solid, but the pass rush needs to step up. True freshmen Dakyus Brinkley and DJ Warner, the highest-ranked recruit in Kansas history, could be factors here.

Special Teams Look to Maintain Consistency

Owen Piepergerdes takes over kicking duties with the hope of replicating the accuracy of his predecessor, Seth Keller. Australian punter Damon Greaves impressed as a true freshman and is expected to continue his role. Luke Grimm’s reliable hands provide a solid option in the return game, while Trevor Wilson offers an explosive threat. The possibility remains that a younger athlete could emerge as a contributor in this area.

Overall Outlook

With a veteran offense led by a healthy Daniels and a defense with a strong secondary, the Jayhawks have the potential to make a serious run at the Big 12 title. Questions remain on the defensive line, but Coach Leipold has instilled a winning culture in Lawrence. The 2024 season could be a defining moment for Kansas football.
